HERM from EPHESUS

The text inscribed on the Hermes Propylaios read: "You will recognise Alkamenes' fine statue, the Hermes Before-the-Gates. Pergamios set it up."

Beneath the dedicatory inscription is the maxim "know thyself". (Athenian Herms not infrequently carried maxims.)
